Let Your Light Shine

Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:15-16 (NIV)

I've been doing a fair amount of embroidery these days. Nothing big, just tinkering around + free-hand stitching as I go. I'd really like to design some patterns, so that I have at least a bit of direction in mind with where my projects should head.

A couple of weekends ago, a threadbare spot on one of my favorite pairs of jeans finally gave way. {Heartbreaking when that happens, isn't it?} While they were no longer wearable, I couldn't bear to just toss them. From the knees down, they were just as richly colored as when I bought them. Surely I could make something out of the material. So, I cut a small section, grabbed a tiny embroidery hoop + searched my stash of floss for some inspiration. I really loved the way the orange + yellow strands stood out so brightly against the dark wash denim. It reminded me of sunshine.

Almost immediately, a verse from Matthew came to mind. That happens quite often to me... sometimes it's a line from a poem or song that just seems perfect for that moment. Anyway, I got to stitching + this is what came from it.

The world can be a pretty dark place. Just turn on the national or local news any night of the week, you'll see. I believe that by choosing kindness + love, though, I can make a difference to those around me. You never know if something as simple as a smile might shine a little ray of hope into a stranger's day. It reminds me of a quote that I tweeted last Monday:
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

-- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. {Strength to Love}

How is your week going so far?
